The World from a 7-Year-Old

I asked my niece, 7 year old Savannah, 25 questions and detailed her responses. Those answers made the world feel a bit lighter.

Sometimes, the world feels heavy. Once you’re an adult, and you’re aware of the bad things in the world, it gets darker. The image you had of life suddenly shifts, and it isn’t everything you thought it was.

What was that view like? The one that you had before you learned about all the bad things?

I don’t know about you, but I do not remember.

I decided the next best way to find out was to ask.

I asked my niece, 7 year old Savannah, 25 questions and detailed her responses. Specifically, I asked her questions by Live Bold & Bloom, from their article, 25 Of The Best Questions To Ask People To Draw Them Out.

The following includes the results of my efforts. None of the questions or answers have been edited for any reason other than clarity or privacy.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy some innocent thoughts from a 7-year-old.

1. What is your best childhood memory?
Savannah: Hmm… that’s a hard one….

Me: Pick one.

Savannah: I like all of ’em, but… the one that I would have to choose is… when we went to Disney, and it was really fun, and I was so glad PaPa had a surprise for us to go to Disney in summer… I think? I’m not sure. I think it was summer.

2. If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently?
Savannah: I would do differently… go to Canada.

3. How did the two of you meet? (Changed to: How did we meet?)
Savannah: (shrugs) I don’t know. I don’t even remember!

4. What do you feel most proud of?
Savannah: When I made it on week one in 2nd grade, I made the first spelling test, the first try.

5. What is your favorite music?
Savannah: Taylor Swift.

6. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
Savannah: Canada, because it’s nice and hot there. Like it doesn’t really snow or rain or anything.

Me: You know that it snows and rains in Canada, right?

Savannah: Yeah but it’s still hot there, which I like.

7. If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be?
Savannah: Food. Water. Blanket. Mom. Dad.

8. What teacher in school made the most impact on you and why?
Savannah: What does that mean? What teacher was my favorite?

Me: Kind of.

Savannah: Hm… that’s hard. There’s three choices. They’re all nice and they all let us go on cool field trips and they’re nice and fun and like let us play games. And (teacher’s name) made a surprise for us on Friday! We didn’t have to do our spelling test and she gave us books!

9. What do you want your tombstone to say?
Savannah:
What is that?

Me: The rock that is on top of you when you are buried. The one with your name on it.

Savannah: Uh…

10. What was one of your most defining moments in life?
Savannah: When I’m sick… (whispers) so hard…

11. Why did you choose that profession? (Changed to: What do you want to be when you grow up?)
Savannah: Teacher. Because I think it’s really fun and like I like having lots of people in my life.

12. How do you spend your free time?
Savannah: Like…what do I do for my free time?

Me: Yeah.

Savannah: Uh… I mostly ask if I can have ice cream sometimes, and I mostly watch TV and play with my toys and do some craft with my art kit that you bought me and I made chocolate donuts… what are those bread things? Like cake and swirl and more donuts. Cinnamon rolls… like some of them had little toppings on there.

13. If you won the lottery, what would you do?
Savannah: Buy a mansion. Um… (whispers) buy a mansion… buy a helicopter… buy a mansion for everyone in my family… (looking at cut on my arm) is your cut ok?

14. Who do you most admire in life?
Savannah: I wanna skip that one.

Me: Why?

Savannah: Ugh! Because like I don’t admire anyone.

15. What are your top three favorite books and why?
Savannah: Um… the one that the teacher gave me, Polar Bears v. Regular Bears and Who Will Win, that’s what it’s called.

Note: She is referencing Polar Bear vs. Grizzly Bear (Who Would Win?) by Jerry Pallotta.

16. What are you most afraid of?
Savannah: Spiders and bees.

17. What feels like love to you?
Savannah: My family.

18. What is your strongest personal quality?
Savannah: What does that mean?

Me: What are you good at?

Savannah: Oh! Um… I’m really good at art that I say to myself, but some kids don’t say I’m good. And, um, I’m really good at sports and passions.

19. What was your most embarrassing moment?
Savannah: Let’s skip. I don’t wanna share it.

Me: Will you tell me if I don’t write it down?

Savannah: Yes.

20. If you were president, what is the first thing you would do?
Savannah: First thing I would do is give everyone a million dollars… even poor… or homeless… whatever you wanna call it.

21. What age do you feel right now and why?
Savannah: (while running across the room) Like I feel 7. Because like I just really like doing fun things and actions and playing games. (sits back down)

22. If you could witness any event of the past, present, or future, what would it be and why?
Savannah: Present. Because I wanna see what my president was like because I don’t wanna spoil my future.

23. What is a skill you’d like to learn and why?
Savannah: I would like to learn…hm…karate…because I think it’s cool.

24. What does a perfect day look like to you?
Savannah: Oh! A perfect day would look like to me when it’s sunny out, my friends come over to play, and we can… like… play with my new toys I got for Christmas… that seems like a perfect day.

25. How would your friends describe you?
Savannah: Fun, funny, and…um…uh… that’s it. I don’t really know but I know they would describe me fun and funny, at least I think.
